On the occasion of 77th International Women’s Day, let’s take a look at 7 women in Tollywood who were trailblazers in their own right.
Vijaya Nirmala is the first of our pick. Her career may have started and ended decades ago, but her Guinness Book World Record remains untouched. Apart from being an amazing actor, wife to superstar Krishna and mother to yet another commendable actor Naresh, Vijaya Nirmala is more. She is the only woman in our history who has directed over 300 films, most of which include the biggest stars of her times.
Action films are considered as a mass genre, even in 2020. But here, meet Vijaya Lalitha! With 860 films to her credit, across languages, there is no way that one cannot talk about her. During the ’60s and ’70s, this lady was credited to be “Female James Bond” of her times, with the choice of roles and films.
With the wide success of Keerthy Suresh starrer Mahanti, the legends of Savitri are now known to every adult and adolescent. She started working at a young age and made it big long before she retired. Although the actor saw a tremendous downfall, she continues to be a trailblazer for the way she carved the path ahead for many actor to follow.
Dancing and expressions came as easy to this lady as breathing comes to us. Even years later, people continue to talk about Jayaprada’s beauty and elegance. Yet another actor of the same times, Jayasudha is also a trailblazer because she has always been commended for her spontaneity. The lady who started as a mainstream heroine went on to do many ‘outgoing’ and ‘bold’ moves in her career. She was also one of the first women of her generation to have embraced roles appropriate to her age. Sridevi started acting at the tender age of 4. Moreover, she was applauded for her work since day one. With times, she moved ahead and became one of the top actresses.
