In a few hours, the clock will strike 12, and everything that ‘is’, will become ‘was’. Too many memories, too many moments, too many films, too much nostalgia. And, as we try to sum up the year that we will leave behind, forever, we decided to take a look at the biggest newsmakers of 2019. And, here are few of our top picks.

Actor Vijay Deverakonda has managed to stay in the news, all year long. With his films, clothing line, production ventures, and simply because of his words, Vijay has made headlines. Amongst the many, let’s look at the four most prominent ones. His film, Dear Comrade, failed to impress audiences, after successful movies like Geetha Govindam. His first film as a producer, Meeku Maathrame Chepta, also met with lukewarm response. Vijay was the only actor who actively came ahead and spoke about the pressing situation of Nalla Malla forests.

Apart from this, the actor was constantly in the news due to his controversial statements about the recently- released Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor, which is a remake of Arjun Reddy. He maintained that he hadn’t seen the Hindi remake, but supported the storyteller’s vision. Moreover, his constant visits to Mumbai, got the press talking about his Bollywood debut. Filmmaker Karan Johar has a reputation for being the ‘launch-specialist’, and he has apparently signed Vijay for a Bollywood film. Hopefully, we will find out more details about it soon.

The days of exchanging story ideas and actors, between Tollywood and Bollywood, are back again. After the incredible success of Kabir Singh, Bollywood is all set to remake Nani’s Jersey with Shahid Kapoor in the lead, again. (PS: Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut’s latest film, Panga’s plotline seems to be the same as Jersey). Not only that Karan Johar also has bought the rights to remake Vijay’s Dear Comrade in Hindi. We wonder what new exchanges the new year will see.

Greekveerudu Nagarjuna rang in his 60th birthday this year. As shocking as it sounds, the news is 100% true. Many film stars and members of the Telugu film fraternity, along with fans, rejoiced on this special occasion. The popular joke is, ‘Nagarjuna has turned 30 (again)!’

Chiranjeevi's Comeback To The Big Screen With Sye Raa Narasimha

Sye Raa Narasimha

After a decade-long hiatus, Mega Star Chiranjeevi made his big comeback. Over the years when he was focusing on his political career, the veteran appeared in a few cameos. But finally, the much-awaited comeback came to us with Surrender Reddy’s directorial, Sye Raa Narasimha. The film was a fictionalised story of the first freedom fighter of India, Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy. It has an ensemble cast of actors from all industries of the country.

While leading ladies like Raashi Khanna, Taapsee Pannu, Rakulpreet Singh, Kajal Agarwal, and the likes, have been crossing over multiple South Indian film-industries, this year we saw men crossover too. So far, it was only Suriya and Karthiwho appeared in Tamil-Telugu films. With Chiru’s Sye Raa, we also saw Vijay Sethupathi take the leap and make his Tollywood debut. Every cinephile knows the power of this man. And, now we hope to see him on the other side more often.

The Telugu film industry saw a huge shift this year. Even the ‘typical’ commercial cinema tried to add more meat to its story. More importantly, the success of small-budget and indie films skyrocketed like never before. From Mahanati to Mallesham and from Brochevarevarura to Raju Vari Rani Garu, the audience happily embraced new stories, newer storytelling, and unconventional performances. In the words of actor-director Rahul Ravindran, “next few years in Telugu cinema look solid“, in terms of high-content films driving the show.

And, on that note, we’re waiting to witness all that’s coming our way, with sheer excitement. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.  Until next time, and in the next year, stay tuned to this space. Get your year-end entertainment right here on ZEE5.
