1. Manali to Leh
We admit, Tollywood hasn’t given us cult road trip movies the way Bollywood has with the likes of Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin starrer Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. But what Tollywood has failed to do, our Telugu serial Kalyana Vaibhogam star VJ Sunny has with the road trip he’s currently doing with his besties in Coorg. Inspired? We got you a list of road trips in India that you must go on if you are a fan of long drives. And yes, the season totally calls for it. So take your car or bike out and take bae or your besties along for an experience of a lifetime.
Zipping along the highways with the majestic Himalayas giving you company, doing this 478 km trip is quite an unforgettable experience. Most of the road is above 4,000 metres altitude so do not forget to make pitstops at Keylong and Sarchu to adjust with the dizzying heights. Be careful of the twists and turns that come along the way. The best time to go is between June and September.
2. Vishakhapatnam to Araku Valley
With just 116 kilometres to cover, this one might seem like a short drive that will take a maximum of three hours. But it sure is a scenic one. With the Bay of Bengal and the Eastern Ghats both giving you company in Vishakhapatnam and then climbing up the hills as you drive towards Araku, this is one road trip that you won’t be able to forget in a while. Along the way, you will come across popular tourist spots such as Borra Caves and Tatipudi Reservoir. Go between October and March.
3. Gangtok to Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La Pass
The Northeast is still relatively unexplored, though this part of Sikkim has a good flow of tourists who throng to Tsomgo Lake and then up hill to Nathu La Pass next to the China border. This 56 kilometre drive can be a bit of a challenge, though the roads are getting better. With the mighty Himalayas keeping you company and pit stops at pretty shacks for tea and Maggi, this two-hour drive is quite a ride.
4. Bandipur Forest to Bengaluru
A distance of 235 kilometres, driving through the forest, lush greenery and occasional sighting of wild animals. Can a road trip sound any better? It’s even more fun when you are travelling in a large group, just remember not to litter and throw plastic behind since it’s a forest area.
5. Bengaluru to Goa
6. Chennai to Pondicherry
Imagine driving with the sea on one side of the road? Did you just say ‘photo ops’? Well, they will be there in plenty in this route which passes through attractions like Unesco World Heritage Site Mahabalipuram, Alamparai Fort, the salt pans of Marakkanam, etc. You won’t even know how the three hours extended to six and more.
